Year of the Panther Cub: We Were There Too!

In April 2024, Meres-Sia produced the first public “Panther Cub” panel. It was an invigorating discussion and community conversation honoring the challenges, blessings, and healing of those who grew up in the Black Panther Party. Hosted by the Richmond Art Center in Richmond, California the goal was to do the following:

  • Recognize and celebrate Richmond’s Black Panther history

  • Share diverse experiences of those who grew up in the Black Panther Party

  • Create a space for intergenerational conversations, communion and healing

With over 200 people in attendance, We Were There Too! was Richmond Art Center’s second highest attended event ever and we thank them for sharing their space with us. We would like to give a special thank you to Kimberly Ross, program coordinator, who went above and beyond to ensure a successful event.

“As a person of multi-ethnic Asian heritages, it is so important to me and for me, to be able to acknowledge, appreciate and honor the sacrifices and learnings from the Cubs (and the Panther parents), that have helped all our communities move forward and organize for greater access, social and economic justice.”

-S. Alegre

"I definitely felt the ancestors with us. I look forward to … collaborating to bring these stories to youth in Oakland, Richmond, and as far as we can reach."

-C. Jong
