Year of the Panther Cub: We Were There Too!
On April 13, 2024, Meres-Sia produced the first public “Panther Cub” panel honoring the challenges, blessings, and healing of those who grew up in the Black Panther Party. An invigorating discussion and community conversation, the inaugural panel was held in Richmond to pay hommage to the city that catapulted the Black Panthers onto the national stage.
With 237 people in attendance, Year of the Panther Cub:We Were There Too! was Richmond Art Center’s second highest attended event ever. We are grateful for their generosity of hosting us.
Ongoing, this panel provides space for:
Communities to learn about the Black Panther Party through the experiences of the children who lived it.
Adult children of the Black Panther Party to share their diverse and unique experiences.
Therapeutic and intergenerational conversations and healing.
We would like to give a special thank you to Kimberly Ross, program coordinator, who went above and beyond to ensure that we had a successful event at Richmond Art Center.

“As a person of multi-ethnic Asian heritages, it is so important to me and for me, to be able to acknowledge, appreciate and honor the sacrifices and learnings from the Cubs (and the Panther parents), that have helped all our communities move forward and organize for greater access, social and economic justice.”
Mike Ellis, former Oakland Black Panther
"Keep doing what you are doing to let people understand the sacrifices our children had to make… All of us old folks are proud of you."
C. Jong
"I definitely felt the ancestors with us. I look forward to … collaborating to bring these stories to youth in Oakland, Richmond, and as far as we can reach."
